Writing Prompt #3: X Marks the Spot

Prompt taken from Writers Digest

You’re a pirate on a small pirate ship, that consists of only you, one other pirate and a captain. Recently you ransacked another ship and found a treasure map. After weeks of following it, you’ve finally found the island where “X” marks the spot. Write a scene where you find the buried treasure, only it’s not exactly the treasure you expected to find.

After many arduous weeks hunting for Captain Black Beard’s treasure we, the crew of the Swift, found the island indicated on the map.  Many people have tried to find his treasure but none have succeeded, maybe we will be the first.  As I look over at Captain Dan I notice that for the first time since we found the map he has a big smile on his face.  We have already made it further than any documented attempt on the treasure and the hunt was on.

Expertly Ronald Mcland, or as we liked to call him Trinket, piloted the small sailboat through a narrow space in a rock wall that seemed to protect the island and we got our first view of the island.  It looked like a tropical paradise including bright colored birds soaring above tall, lush trees.  Directly in front of our boat was shore of pristine sand.  The only sign of it ever having been disturbed was a small wood hut sitting just at the tree line.  Even from here I could tell it was overrun with plants and had not been used in a while.

Together, all three of us lowered the small rowboat over the side and then took turns climbing down into it.  The Captain sat in the back, I in the middle, and Trinket at the bow of the dingy.  Trinket placed a small wood carving of a four leaf clover on the front of the dingy as I started to row to shore.

“For luck.” He said when he caught me looking.  That’s why we call him Trinket, he always has some little trinket on him.

Once we got to shore following the map wasn’t hard.  We walked through a few of the trees and came out onto a point of land that overlooked the rock wall that protected the island.  The sun shown down from above and directly in front of us was was a patch of dirt that lay undisturbed by the grass and plants around it.

All three of us looked at each other.  I had to admit even I was excited even though I was just along for the ride.  The hunt is what I enjoyed not the end goal, that just helped me pay rent.  Trinket and I produced small shovels from on our belts and began to dig.

Thud.  An hour later our shovels hit a wood box and as we worked around the box with the shovels we unearthed a wooden treasure chest about two and a half feet long by a foot wide.  It was a little smaller than I was expecting but if it contained jewels it could still be worth plenty enough to make Captain Dan and Trinket happy for a long time.  And well stocked on trinkets too.

The Captain drew his sword and used it to pry the lock off the chest.  Kneeling down we all looked at each other and the Captain slowly opened the chest.  Only one thing lay inside.  A note and on it read:

Happiness is the best treasure in life.

Update

Haven’t seen a new post in a while?  That’s because there hasn’t been.  I overloaded with credits last quarter and turned in a 154 page senior project.  Additionally, I have been training to pass physical tests for the police academies I have applied to.  This quarter I have a regular amount of classes so there should be more content coming.

English 314 – Writing Fictions: Longer Forms

This quarter I am taking English 314 with Dr. Meyers.  So far the class is extremely enjoyable.  Not only that though, it includes writing prompts to open the class.  If you have been following my blog in the past you can probably guess what that means… regular prompts.  I will be posting my responses to most of the in class prompts on here.   I might also post other work for this class.  We shall see, it is only the second week of the class.

Books

Since the last time I was on my blog I have finished several books and the regular recap of the books I have read will be posted soon.

Personal Writing Update

Currently I am working on a piece titled “Noble Lady by Birth, Lady Warrior by Heart.”  It is a fantasy piece set in a kingdom known as Hiddenvalle.  More details will come as the story progresses.  But it is my piece for my English 314 class so it will get worked on.
