NaNoWriMo 2017: Detective 139

NaNoWriMo 2017

There are 10 days left until the start of November, and you know what that means! NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is almost back. With that, I am doing some prep work to prepare myself for the difficulties of this month. Balancing two jobs and a 50,000 word manuscript.

Every November, novelists and writers from around the world take time out of their month to write at least 50,000 words. A short novel. If you complete all 50,000 words in one month, you win. While you might not win anything tangible, you win the ability to say you created something in one month. Something that means something to you. For several years now I have participated in this adventure and I have to say, it is one of the most enjoyable writing experiences I have ever had. So just like the past years, I am going to participate this year too.

This year I am writing a detective thriller type book that I have been thinking of and have tried writing a couple of times before. With the planning and the time limit, I believe that this time I can make it come to fruition. In case you didn’t get it, the title of the novel is Detective 139. The title comes from Detective Lincoln Thomas’s unit number. Want to know a little bit about the story?

During a gang drug bust, Detective Lincoln Thomas’s partner is shot and killed. Lincoln himself is severely injured. After performing a lateral transfer to the Washington State Troopers, his girlfriend leaving him, and dropping out of contact with all his old friends, Lincoln still isn’t completely recovered. A department mandated psychologist orders Lincoln to take a vacation. But vacation isn’t always crime free.

Trapped by the snow in the Sun Mountain hotel, when a murder happens, Lincoln is the only law enforcement officer around. Not just that, the woman murdered is a friend of a girl he met at the hotel bar the night before. Can Lincoln solve the crime or will there be more deaths? Will one of them be his own?

So join me as I put pen to paper (or in this case fingers to keys) in order to create Detective 139. I will be posting regular updates here on the book along with planning material and other information about my progress.

If you are looking for the NaNoWriMo website, you can find it here.  If you want to see the page for my novel in particular it is here.  But just remember, I can’t start writing until November.

Oops…Pretend its Tuesday. Tuesday 11/20 NaNoWriMo Update

Current Word Count: 43224

Sorry about posting this a day late, I am traveling and did not get the chance to post an update.  I did write yesterday though but haven’t had the chance yet today.  That means my word count on NaNo is still what it was at yesterday, so this update has yesterday’s word count.  Not writing yet today may sound like a bad thing but never fear!  I am almost to my base line word count goal of 50,000 words.  I am actually hoping to get more than that though so we will see what I can do.

Tuesday 11/6 NaNoWriMo Update

Well hello readers!  We are six days into NaNoWriMo and I am posting my first update.  Every Tuesday expect an update from me.  Why Tuesdays?  Because Tuesdays are my first day of class every week and I consider it the beginning of my week.  Let’s take a look at some of the days this week.  On the right hand side you will see a calendar of the month along with how I did for each day.  It looks a little bit like this:

On days where the calendar is light green I have met my word goal or exceded it.  On days where it is dark green I have greatly exceded my goal.  If the day is red, I have missed my goal by a lot.  If the day is yellow my goal has not been met but by a smaller amount.  So for the first six days, including today I have only missed goal on one day.  On most days I have actually exceded the goal.  Let’s take a look at another graph that shows some progress.

NaNoWriMo 2012 ChartThis chart was taken off my user page of the NaNoWriMo stats page.  According to this graph five out of six days I have exceded the goal.  As of today I am way above the goal.  I have one more number to throw out at you: 37,275 words left to go!

Again, every Tuesday look for an update that is similar to this.  Most of them will just be stats and not be as wordy so take a good look at these charts and numbers.

This year I have officially registered for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).  In the past I was nervous that I wouldn’t finish a piece.  This year I have friends who are under taking the challenge so I figured I would to.

The Challenge

From November 1st until the end of November the goal is to write a whole novel, at least 50,000 words of one.  You may not use any previously written material, everything in the 50,000 word count must be new material from Novemember 1st on.

If you complete 50,000 words by November 30th at Midnight, you are a winner.  “Winners” must be varified by  by the staff.  They have a very specific upload method and you can find out more about that on their website.  Actually, head on over there and sign up, give it a go.  If you want to add me as a writing buddy my username is cailindresden.
